Ep. Adv., used by Hom. only as intens. before the Sup. ἄριστος, ὄχ’ ἄριστος far the best, Il. 1.69, al. ; cf. ἔξοχα. (Prob. from ἔχω to hold; ὄχα is to ὀχυρός as the old Germ. fast very, to fest fast, tight.)

(mit ἔχω zusammenhangend ; nach Döderlein verhält sich das altdeutsche fast (= sehr) zu fest, haltbar, wie ὄχα zu ὀχυρός), gar sehr, bei Hom. immer als ein verstärkender Zusatz des Superlativs ἄριστος, ὄχ' ἄριστος, bei weitem der beste, z.B. Il. 1.69. Vgl. ἔξοχα.
