ὁ, der Bockhirsch, ein phantastisch gebildetes Tier, das den Griechen nur aus Abbildungen auf Teppichen und andern Kunsterzeugnissen des Orients bekannt war, Ar. Ran. 935 ; ausdrücklich als fabelhaftes Wesen mit Kentauren zusammengestellt von Plat. Rep. VI.488a ; Arist. ausc. phys. 4.1. – Daher auch ein Trinkgeschirr, auf dem das Vorderteil eines solchen Bockhirsches in erhabener Arbeit dargestellt war, Ath. XI.484d ; Antiphan. ib. 500e ; vgl. Böckh Staatshaush. II p. 305. – Späterhin wird ein wirkliches Tier in Arabien od. am Phasis damit bezeichnet, wahrscheinlich eine Antilopen- od. Gazellenart mit einem Bocksbart, DS. 2.51. – Auch der päonische Stier, vielleicht der Auerochs oder Bison.
