ὁ (μάσσω), ursprünglich der Knetende, Brotbackende, das älteste Geschäft des μάγειρος war nämlich das Brotbacken, vgl. Plin. H.N. 18.28 ; übh. Koch, Ar. Eq. 416 ; neben ὀψοποιός, Plat. Rep. II.373c ; von dem er als der höhere unterschieden wird, Ath. IX.405a. Aber auch Schlächter, wie es scheint, τοῦ μαγείρου – ὀστῶδες σφόδρα αὐτῷ τι προσκόπτοντος ἀπὸ τύχης κρέας, Macho bei Ath. VI.243f, womit Plat. Euthyd. 301d zu vgl., προσήκει τὸν μάγειρον κατακόπτειν καὶ ἐκδείρειν. – Die Alten leiten es von τὰς μάζας μερίζειν od. τὰς μαγίδας αἴρειν ab.
