(where Sch. expl. κώδων as τὸ πλατὺ τῆς σάλπιγγος, i.e. the mouth of the trumpet, cf. Rhes. 308 ; τοῦ κώδωνος παρενεχθέντος Thuc. 4.135, geht auf die Sitte, bei Untersuchung der Nachtwachen durch die Glocke ein Zeichen zu geben, auf welches sogleich die Wache anrufen mußte, als die Schar mit der Glocke vorbeizog, welche die Runde bei den Posten machte ; vgl. Hesych. u. Schol. Ar. Lys. 486, der sagt, daß man auch die Wachteln mit einer Glocke prüfte, um ihre Fähigkeit zum Kampfe zu erforschen ; ὑπὸ κώδωνι ἐξαναστάς Luc. merc.cond. 24 ; a.Sp.; – Dem. sagt 25.90 ἃ τῶν ἄλλων ἕκαστος ἀψοφητὶ ποιεῖ, ταῦτα οὗτος μόνον οὐ κώδωνας ἐξαψάμενος διαπράττεται, wie unser »an die große Glocke schlagen«.
Uebertr., geschwätzig, wie Ar. Pax 1044 ἡ κώδων ἀκαλανθίς vrbdt, wo der Schol. sagt ὅτι λάλον τὸ ζῷον.
