ὁ, also ἡ (Th. 1.113, A.R. 4.257), the name of several Greek cities, the most famous of which was Ὀρχομενὸς Μινύειος in Boeotia, Il. 2.511, etc. ; — Adj. Ὀρχομένιος, Hp. Ulc. 7, Hdt. 9.16, SIG 519.7 (Aegium, iii BC), Str. 9.2.40 ; — hence Ὀρχομενίζω, side with the Orchomenians, Hellanic. 81 J. (but perh. not Hellanic.). — The old Boeot. form was Ἐρχ-, and this is found in Inscrr. and on coins to the time of Alexander, SIG 60 (v BC), IG 7.3166, al., BMus.Cat.Coins Central Greece p. 54; the Arcadian Orchomenians are similarly Ἐρχομένιοι SIG 31.12 (Delph., v BC), Ἐρχομίνιοι IG 5(2).343 (Orchom. Arc., iv BC).
