'ὁπότ·αν, conj. quand par hasard, d’où en gén. quand, lorsque, en deux mots dans Homère, ὁπότ' ἄν ou ὁππότ' ἄν (v. ὁπότε) et chez les Att. lorsque ὁπότ' ἄν est joint à un autre relatif également accompagné de ἄν, avec lequel il marque un même mouvement de la pensée : ὁπότ' ἂν βούληται καὶ ὃν ἂν δύνηται τρόπον, DÉM. 569, 20, quand il voudra et comme il pourra ; en tout autre cas, ὁπόταν :
      1 avec le sbj. après un temps princip. ou un impér. PD. P. 1, 6, etc. ; SOPH. Ph. 146 ; XÉN. Cyr. 3, 2, 7, etc. ; après un inf. prés. au sens d’un fut. THC. 5, 7 ; après un part. fut. XÉN. An. 7, 1, 12 ; qqf. après un temps second. quand on parle d’un fait habituel, et qui se produit au moment où l’on parle, SOPH. El. 91 ;
      2 avec l’opt. après une prop. dont le verbe est lui-même à l’opt. avec ἄν : εἶθ', ὁπόταν ἥκοι ἐπὶ τὸ δεῖπνον, λέγοιμ' ἂν ὅτι λοῦται, XÉN. Cyr. 1, 3, 11, ensuite, quand il viendrait pour le souper, je lui dirais que (le roi) est au bain ; cf. PLAT. 2 Alc. 146 a ;
      3 postér. avec l’ind. SCH.-THC. 1, 49, etc. ; mais non IL. 21, 340, où φθέγξομαι est un sbj. épq. p. φθέγξωμαι, ou OD. 1, 41, où ἱμείρεται est un sbj. épq. p. ἱμείρηται.

i.e. ὁπότ’ ἄν, as it is freq. written in codd. (the distn. did not exist for the Greeks) ; Adv., related to ὅταν as ὁπότε to ὅτε (v. ὁπότε), whensoever, used only with subj., Il. 15.209, etc. (Hom. uses ὁππότε κεν in the same way, Il. 4.40, 229, al.); rarely after past tenses, πολλὰς… ᾔσθου πλαγάς, ὁπόταν… νὺξ ὑπολείφθῃ (for ὁπότε νὺξ ὑπολειφθείη) S. El. 91 (anap.); never with ind. in early writers, for φθέγξομαι (Il. 21.340), ἱμείρεται (Od. 1.41) are Ep. aor. subj. forms, and in Od. 16.282 θῇσιν is the right reading ; never with opt. save in late writers (unless the Mss. can be trusted in Pl. Alc. 2.146a), for in Il. 7.415 ὁππότ’ ἄρ’ is the reading of the best codd. ; in X. Cyr. 1.3.11 ὁπότε ἥκοι is the right reading.

ep. ὁππόταν, statt ὁππότ' ἄν, wie es auch seit Wolf im Hom. immer geschrieben wird, eigtl. in dem Falle, daß etwa, falls, dann wann, c. conj., auf die Gegenwart od. Zukunft gehend, eine zeitliche Bedingung aussprechend ; Pind. P. 1.4, 8.8 ; ὁπόταν δὲ μόλῃ, Soph. Phil. 146 ; El. 91 ; ὁπόταν ἄλλ' αὐτῷ βελτίω δόξῃ, Plat. Polit. 300c ; indirekt auch in Beziehung auf die Vergangenheit, mit dem den Griechen geläufigen Uebergange in die lebhaftere direkte Darstellung, εἱστήκει παρὰ τὰς πύλας, ὡς, ὁπόταν ἔξω γένωνται πάντες, ἀποκλείσων τὰς πύλας, Xen. An. 7.1.12. – Steht im Hauptsatze der opt. pot., so folgt in einzelnen, aber nicht ganz sicheren Beispielen der opt., ὁπόταν ἥκοι, λέγοιμ' ἄν, Xen.
