Ion. ἀνακ-, hold back, stay, hinder, ἀ. τὰς νέας keep them riding at anchor, Hdt. 6.116 (cf. Hsch. s.v. ἀνακωχεύω), etc. ; metaph, of a chariot, hold it in, keep it back, S. El. 732; also ἀ. πόλεμον D.H. 9.16. ἀ. τὸν τόνον τῶν ὅπλων keep up the tension of the ropes, keep them taut, Hdt. 7.36.
keep afloat, Arist. Cael. 313a23. also intr. (sc. ἑαυτόν), keep still, Hdt. 9.13; hold back, of ships, D.S. 11.18. — The form ἀνακωχέω support, relieve strain upon, is found in Hp. Art. 9, 38, Mochl. 2.
