Ep. Dep., used by Hom. only in 3 pl. aor., snatch up and carry off, ἀνηρείψαντο, of the gods, 11.20.234, cf. Pi. Pae. 6.136, A.R. 2.503; of the Harpies, Od. 1.241, etc. ; of storms, 4.727; so παῖδα… Ἀφροδίτη ὦρτ’ ἀνερειψαμένη Hes. Th. 990; τὴν Ἀργὼ οὐρανὸς ἀνηρείψατο Them. Or. 27.333a; — later, take upon oneself, πόνον Orph. A. 290.
(The true spelling is prob. ἀνηρεψ, which has Ms. authority in Hes. l.c. and A.R. 1.214; cf. ἀ[να]ρέψατο Pi. Pae. l.c., and ἀνερεψάμενοι, Hsch. ; v. ἅρπυια.)
