κλεψ·ύδρα, ας (ἡ) [ῠ] clepsydre, horloge d’eau pour marquer le temps accordé aux orateurs ; elle était formée de deux récipients superposés, le supérieur laissant couler l’eau lentement dans l’inférieur par un conduit allongé (αὐλός) percé de plusieurs petites ouvertures (τρυπήματα) AR. water-clock, a water-butt with a narrow orifice underneath, through which the water trickled slowly, for measuring periods of time, used to time speeches in the law-courts, Ar. V. 93, 857, Arist. ἡ, Wasseruhr, in welcher, wie bei den Sanduhren, das Wasser in einem enghalsigen Gefäße durch ein feine Oeffnung am Boden rinnt, sich gleichsam heimlich durchstiehlt, Schol. Ar. Ach. 693 u. Vesp. 93 ; Simplic. ad Arist. coel. 2 beschreibt sie als ἀγγεῖον στενόστομον πλατεῖαν ἔχον τὴν βάσιν μικραῖς ὀπαῖς διατετρυπημένην ; vgl. auch Empedocl. 257 ff. (bei Arist. respir. 7) u. Sturz dazu ; oft erwähnt in Athen, wo nach der κλεψύδρα den Rednern die Zeit zum Sprechen zugemessen wurde, vgl. Ar. Av. 1695 u. s. ὕδωρ unten ; πίνειν δεήσει πρὸς κλεψύδραν Epinic. bei Ath. XI.497a ; Arist. Probl. 16.8 u. sonst.
