Hes.; er bestand in dieser ältesten Zeit aus dichten Flechtwerk (vgl. σάκκος) od. aus Holz, worüber rohe, harte Ochsenhäute einfach oder in mehreren Lagen gezogen waren, welche auch mit Metalllagen wechselten ; der schwerste, stärkste Schild, den Hom. <i>Il<\/i>. 7.222 erwähnt, besteht aus 7 Ochsenhäuten und einer achten Metalllage ; μέγα τε στιβαρόν τε, 3.335 ; er heißt sonst noch χάλκεον, χαλκῆρες, τετραθέλυμνον, ἑπταβόειον, auch, was von früher Kunst in der Verzierung u. Politur der Schilde zeugt, δαιδάλεον, ποικίλον, αἰόλον, παναίολον, φαεινόν ; vgl. die Beschreibung des Schildes des Achilleus, 18.428 ff.; u. des Herakles, Hes. <i>Sc<\/i>. 139 ff. Er wird über die Schulter mit einem Tragriemen getragen, ἑλὼν σάκος ὤμῳ <i>Il<\/i>. 15.474, ἀφείλετο ὤμων 125, vgl. <i>Od<\/i>. 14.277 ; χαλκόδετα, Aesch. <i>Spt<\/i>. 145 ; χαλκήλατον, 522 u. öfter ; ἑπτάβοιον ἄρρηκτον, Soph. <i>Aj<\/i>. 573 ; Eur."
