Bei Homer ist in der Regel das Mittagessen die Hauptmahlzeit, und demgemäß bezeichnet er zunächst dieses durch δεῖπνον und δειπνεῖν. Sodann gebraucht er δειπνεῖν aber auch vom Frühstücke, welches er ἄριστον nennt. Dieser letztere Gebrauch, δειπνεῖν vom ἄριστον, ist wohl ganz einfach für eine Katachrese zu halten, d.h. δειπνεῖν hatte auch die allgemeinere Bedeutung = <i>essen<\/i>. Vgl. s.v. δεῖπνον. Doch ist zu bemerken, daß δειπνεῖν bei Homer niemals vom Abendessen gebraucht wird, welches er δόρπον nennt. Unzweifelhaft vom Mittagessen, δεῖπνον, wird δειπνεῖν <i>Od<\/i>. 17.359, 506 gebraucht ; unzweifelhaft vom Frühstücke, ἄριστον, wird δειπνεῖν <i>Od<\/i>. 15.397, 9.312 gebraucht. Ganz genau läßt sich nicht immer zwischen Frühstück und Mittagessen unterscheiden, vgl. <i>Od<\/i>. 5.95, 14.111, 15.79, <i>Il<\/i>. 19.304. Ziemlich deutlich tritt die allgemeine Bedeutung = »essen« <i>Od<\/i>. 4.685, 9.155, 20.119 hervor. – Was die Konstruktion betrifft, so gebraucht Homer δειπνεῖν überall intransitiv, absolut. Was die Formen betrifft, so erscheint δειπνεῖν bei Homer meist im aorist. 1. activ.; imperfect. ἐδείπνεε <i>Od<\/i>. 17.506, wo auch ἐδείπνει in den Vers passen würde, ἡμένη ἐν θαλάμῳ' ὁ δ' ἐδείπνεε δῖος Ὀδυσσεύς ; 3. singular. plusquamperf. δεδειπνήκειν ebenfalls im 17. Buche der <i>Od<\/i>., vs. 359, Aristarchs Lesart, <i>Scholl. Didym<\/i>. εὖθ' ὁ δεδειπνήκειν : οὕτω, δεδειπνήκειν, ἀντὶ τοῦ δεδειπνήκει, ὡς τὸ » ἤσκειν εἴρια καλά (<i>Il<\/i>. 3.388)«. – Folgende : fut. δειπνήσομαι DS. 11.9 ; perf. synkop. δεδείπναμεν, δεδειπνάναι, Comic. bei Ath. X.422 ef ; δείπνειας (?) <i>ib<\/i>. XI.479c. Da bei den Attikern nicht wie bei Homer das Mittagessen, sondern das Abendessen die Hauptmahlzeit war, so bezeichneten sie auch durch δεῖπνον nicht wie Homer das Mittagessen, sondern das Abendessen, und gebrauchten δειπνεῖν dem entsprechend vom Abendessen, Thuc. 3.112, u. sonst. – C. accus., τἀλλότρια Xen. <i>Symp<\/i>. 1.11 ; πολυτελῆ δεῖπνα Luc. <i>Dial.Mort<\/i>. 10.11 ; – ἀπό τινος Ar. <i>Plut<\/i>. 890. – Xen. <i>Cyr<\/i>. 1.2.11 τὸ ἄριστον τοῦτο δειπνήσαντες, das zum ἄριστον Mitgenommene als δεῖπνον verzehren. – Hes. <i>O<\/i>. 442 ἄρτον δειπνήσας, Homerisch ; Hom. <i>h.
